International Relations

A contemporary and dynamic discipline, International Relations is the study of politics at the international, cross-national, transnational, regional and global level. Although a relatively modern discipline, it is one of increasing relevance in the contemporary world because of what can be broadly termed globalisation. We are constantly reminded of the impact of international relations on everyday lives from climate change to agricultural trade, from terrorism to refugees. A major in International Relations is therefore at the cutting edge of current concerns. The solutions to many national problems are now intricately linked with regional and international treaties and conventions.

International Relations at UNSW

UNSW has research strength in several areas of International Relations, including International Political Economy, and the Politics of International Law. Our staff are not only leading researchers in their respective fields but experienced teachers and the authors of leading texts in the field.  We encourage students to develop a spirit of critical enquiry, and equip them with the intellectual tools necessary to pursue diverse career paths.

Career Opportunities

The study of International Relations has some clear career advantages. It is essential for a number of career paths, especially those sections
of public service involving policy, planning, diplomacy, foreign affairs, and international trade. Graduates work in education and in journalism,
and a number work for not for- profit non-governmental organisations. The private sector is also interested in our graduates because of the training we provide in critical thinking and analysis.

International Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to complete an international exchange for one or two semesters as part of their degree. UNSW manages a large
and active exchange program with over 180 different student exchange opportunities in 32 countries.
