Centre for Refugee Research

The Centre for Refugee Research (CRR) is an interdisciplinary research centre at UNSW. CRR focuses on international refugee flows, internally displaced people, forced migration and resettlement issues. It conducts research, education and advocacy programs, partnering with community based refugee organisations, in relation to the:

• Nexus between refugee circumstances overseas and the resettlement experience in developed countries

• Identification of and response to the most vulnerable refugees, in particular women and girls at risk.

CRR adopts a human rights framework and engages principles of community development and social justice in all its work.


Exciting opportunities for 2011

 
The Centre for Refugee Research is pleased to announce it will be offering a series of exciting internship opportunities throughout 2011.

Students enrolled in the Master of Social Development, the Master of Arts Development Studies and a range of other programs can chose to undertake one of these opportunities as either an internship or a project as part of their course of study. All internships are self funded by students and places are competitive.

There are both local and international internships available which can be taken in Session 1 or Session 2 of 2011.

Centre for Refugee Research, Sydney Summer and Semester 1, 2011

In June 2011, just prior to the UNHCR meetings, the Centre for Refugee Research, in partnership with UNHCR, Refugee Council of Australia and other prominent Refugee organisations, will host an International conference in Sydney to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the refugee convention. It will include a Women’s Dialogue and a Youth Forum. We are looking for interns to start work as early as February to assist in this project in a number of different roles.

UNHCR Geneva, June 2011

The internship to UNHCR in June 2011 is a very special occasion. Prior to June, as part of the 60th Anniversary of the refugee convention, the Centre for Refugee Research is running a series of “Dialogues’ with refugee women in India, Colombia, Jordan, Zambia, Uganda, Thailand and Australia. The finding of these dialogues will be presented at the June meetings in Geneva. Refugee women from each place will travel to Geneva to take part in the event. Interns will play an important role in supporting this process and documenting the proceedings.

 India, November 2011

Details for the internship to India are currently being confirmed with partner organizations in the region however it is expected interns will participate in the development, documentation and delivery of a range of training opportunities to refugees from Burma living in New Delhi.

Thailand, November/December 2011

As part of this internship, students will travel to the Thai-Burma border to work with refugee communities from Burma and will participate as documenters and facilitators in a series of training courses including those focused on income generation and marketing, human rights and gender, a community response to violence against women and counselling. Students will assist in the preparation of a range of outcomes from the training including the preparation of advocacy reports and training packages. Further information on this opportunity will be available in March.
