Research

Jung-Sook Lee is a senior lecturer in Social Work at the School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UNSW. Her research focuses on wellbeing of vulnerable children and their families. The specific topics include risk and resilience factors in children’s development, the contributions of social and cultural capital in children’s development, families with financial hardships, parental educational involvement, wellbeing of children in out-of-home care, educational and employment support for young people in out-of-home care, and young people with complex support needs. She has extensive experience in working with quantitative research methods and analyses of large complex data.

 

RESEARCH AREAS

Inequality, intergenerational social mobility, social and cultural capital, social justice and social inclusion, child and family wellbeing, early intervention, education of children in out of home care, care leavers and adult outcomes

Current Research Projects

  • The Long-term Outcomes of Forgotten Australians: This is an ARC funded project to understand life experiences of 'care leavers' who have lived in all types of institutions and other forms of out-of-home-care as children. This study aims to explore risk and protective factors in their life trajectories, identify their current unmet needs and inform contemporary out of home care and after care.
  • Lost in Transition - Young People with Complex Support Needs: This is an ARC funded project to understand the lives of young people with complex support needs who experience overlapping forms of disadvantage and frequent transitions between services, institutions and care environments. The project aims to analyse early life transitions and the supports available and to suggest best practice for transition support and a framework for how to track transitions using existing data.
  • Social Work in Diverse Society: This is an interdisciplinary study that explores the issues of toleration, respect, recognition, and power in social work discourse.
  • CALD Young Carers: This study explores experiences of young carers from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Past Research Projects 

  • An Evaluation Study of the Ubuntu Care Project: This study was to evaluate a project that aimed to prevent sexual abuse among children with a disability in Burundi, Africa. The funding was provided by the Children and Violence Evaluation Challenge Fund.
  • Education and Life Chances of Young PeopleThe project explored the role of education in shaping young people’s life chances including employment, income, social participation, and wellbeing.
  • The Effects of Poverty on Children’s OutcomesThis project investigated the effects of poverty on children’s physical, socio-emotional, learning, and health outcomes. The duration, timing, and depth of poverty are given special considerations.
  • Social Work Services in Australian SchoolsThis project investigated the current situations of and possibilities for social work services in Australian schools.
